"...diversity of repertoire is amazing, their musicianship outstanding and the unusual range of their vocalist a joy to hear..." *
This unique Sydney based band presents original and familiar material and have been touring nationally and overseas.
Featuring two double basses, guitar, mandolin, citern, banjo and vocals they can take you from folk to jazz to tango and back again.
The members of urban eXcentrics have backgrounds in classical, traditional, rock/original, jazz and musical theatre and use all of these influences in their work.
Individually they have worked with such artists as Bones (Midnight Oil), Pavarotti, James Morrison, John Farnham, Violent Femmes, renowned musicians Larry and Andra Muhoberac, Andy White, Col and Denny Burgess (Masters Apprentices) +++
Ann, Paul and Larry also have strong connections with the Australian Songwriters Association.
Their latest collaboration with Tango violinist Jacinta McPhillamy and dancer Anne-Maree Therkelson has led to a newly recorded tango CD and increasing demand for tango performances. The ability of urban eXcentrics to play for a variety of genres has led to them being featured as Bride To Be magazine's band of the month July 2007, re-booked for Gundagai's Irish and Australian Turning Wave Festival, Fete de la Musique and tango band for the National Folk Festival dance programme 2007, and finalists for a contemporary song contest.
Ann Palumbo Annís classical training is tempered with the raw talent of her Liverpool/Irish heritage
and contributes to her musical diversity. She performs on double bass, guitar, mandolin and vocals and arranges most of the band's material.
She plays with Willoughby Symphony Orchestra and freelances with other bands and ensembles and a great joy is teaching and facilitating the opportunity for others to realise their potential.
Larry Hoofs Larryís guitar versatility and citern playing contribute a unique element to the groupís musical creativity.
Ranging from reggae beats to eastern influences through rock and jazz, Larry brings the eXcentric side to the band. He also plays citern with The Tinku Band, an East-meets-West rock outfit, and performs and records as a solo guitarist (CD available).
Paul Laszlo Paulís double bass virtuosity adds another dimension to the band.
He has played with Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, Sydney Symphony, freelances and is principal bass of Willoughby Symphony and Australian Festival Orchestras.
His recent stint as banjo soloist with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra has given momentum to banjo as an integral part of the group.
He also teaches at Newcastle Conservatorium.
Ben Palumbo With a unique voice crossing genres of Irish tenor, cool jazz, classical and contemporary, Ben also accesses a sublime falsetto extension soaring to heights that would match any soprano. His voice is stunning. Ben also has a background in Theatre and Circus arts performing at the Sydney Olympics opening Ceremony and appearing on the blockbuster film "Moulin Rouge"
